Inaugurated in 1940, the church was declared a "Diocesan Marian Shrine" by Bishop Ross on August 11, 1942. Even today, pilgrims stop there, especially to visit the tomb of Father Jean-Marie Watier, a priest of the Order of the Servite Fathers of Mary.
